This panorama of the Penn State Nittany Lions™ football team playing at Beaver Stadium was taken by James Simmons. Penn State’s spirit and traditions were ever apparent as Nittany Lion fans flooded Beaver Stadium in a sea of white for a White Out Game on October 27, 2012 against Ohio State. Penn State traditions also include the athletic symbol chosen by the student body in 1906; it is the mountain lion which once roamed central Pennsylvania. Since Penn State is located in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nittany, the lion was designated as a Nittany Lion. In regional folklore, Nittany was a valorous Indian princess in whose honor the Great Spirit caused Mount Nittany to be formed. Penn State was established in 1855.
